Congregational Singing
At the core of our sacred music is the song of the people. When we gather, the song of the church belongs not to one or two or a select few, but to all of us. And so we emphasize the importance of all of us bringing the best of what we have to bring to our collective song.
We have a fondness for the time-tested hymns of the church of the ages, but we also strive to include music of our age and of our children. We use the New Century Hymnal, believing it to be a collection of old and new, of traditional and contemporary hymns and sacred songs, and of the timeless message in modern and inclusive language. Included in the NCH are modern psalm texts and assorted liturgical music to help shape our worship. No hymnal is perfect, however, and we occasionally add songs and refrains from contemporary sources, such as the Iona Community, the Taizé Community, and contemporary American songwriters.
In all, we strive to bring a balance of old and new, traditional and contemporary, familiar and new. In so doing we believe we become a modest representation of the whole church, of whom we are only a part, and with whom we join our voices in the eternal song.
