About the Author

Gordon Bruns is the Director of Music at Second Reformed Music, Zeeland, Michigan. His life course is itself a study in counterpoint, as his interests and career have taken him into and through several different fields.

His work with Second Church began as organist in 2007. He has previously developed his identity as a pastoral musician as Director of Music at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Clayton, Missouri; Assistant Pastor and Minister of Music and Education at Grace Lutheran Church, Pontiac, Michigan; Organist and Choirmaster at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, Oak Park, Illinois; and as assisting musician at United Lutheran Church, Oak Park.

In addition, to his position at Second Church, he is the managing partner of Bruns Leadership Consulting, for which his wife Rebecca is president. His other pursuits have included: counseling services and counselor education at Grant Hospital and the Clincial Training Program for Addictions Counselors, Chicago, Illinois; and administrative and managerial positions at Grace Episcopal Church and Community Center, Chicago, and the Berghaus Pipe Organ Builders, Bellwood, Illinois.

He is a graduate of Christ Seminary–Seminex, St. Louis (M.Div., 1979), where he also served as chapel organist and accompanist to the seminary chorus. His studies included post-graduate work in sacred music. (Christ Seminary is now a part of the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago.) In addition, he is a graduate of Concordia University, River Forest, with studies in professional counseling (M.A., 1999).

He and Rebecca are fairly recent residents of western Michigan, relocating to Laketown Township in 2005, simply because it seemed like the right place to live in greater harmony with woods, water, sky, and stars. They have not been disappointed!
